Graduate Credit & Continuing Education Units

Two graduate semester hour credits will be offered through Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota Course number is MUS 601. We will issue and submit all course registration forms for the Wind Band Institute. The cost of $115 per credit is in addition to the Wind Band Institute fee. For those seeking continuing education units, a certificate of verification listing number of contact hours will be distributed on the final day of the Institute.

Work Requirements for various grades

  • Pass/Fail: active class participation and a journal describing the practical application of knowledge acquired in the course related to the participant's own instrumental ensemble(s).
  • Grade of "B": journal as described above, plus describe in writing (2 pages) a wind band education topic discussed in the course which is of special interest to the participant and its practical application to their own program.
  • Grade of "A": journal and paper as described above, and an additional paper (circa 3 to 5 pages) exploring a specialized aspect of wind band music which has practical application for the participant.

Concordia College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Associations of College and Schools.

Official Course Description

This course is designed to enhance the skill level and increase the breadth of knowledge of the participant in several primary facts of wind band education. Participants will observe and practice the performance skills required in conducting and rehearsal technique. Additionally, participants will learn score study and preparation, instrumental pedagogies, repertoire selection, conducting and rehearsal strategies together with a comprehensive study of the elements of wind band ensemble. The primary target audience for this course includes wind band conductors and wind band educators who hold an undergraduate degree in music. However, students currently enrolled in an undergraduate course of study in instrumental music would find the course useful and applicable.
